In mathematics, rounding decimals is done frequently, which involves approximating a decimal number to a particular place value. Calculations are frequently made simpler by rounding, and it also makes it simpler to compare and estimate values.

You must carry out the following steps in order to round a decimal to a particular place value:

• Determine the place value where you want to round the decimal. For instance, to round the decimal to the closest tenth, the place value will be the tenth place (the place that is right of the decimal point).
• Focus on the digit in the place value towards the right of the place value you are rounding to. This is the rounding digit we are referring to here.
• In case the rounding digit is smaller than 5, leave the number in the place value you are rounding to unchanged.

For example, consider the number 0.567. To round this number to the nearest tenth, we would look at the hundredth place, which is the digit 7. Since 7 is greater than 5, we would increase the digit in the tenth place (the digit 5) by 1, giving us a rounded number of 0.6.

Do remember that while rounding, you should always take the value of the number as a whole, instead of just the rounded value. For instance, rounding 0.567 to the closest tenth gives 0.6, but the exact value of the number is nevertheless a little less than 0.6.
