How to Round Up a Number to One Decimal Place?

Year 3 students need to be able to round numbers with one decimal place to the nearest whole number. This skill is often required when working with money or measures. Online math tutors at CrunchGrade do an excellent job of teaching the skill of rounding numbers to young students.

  • To round a number with one decimal place to the nearest whole number, we need to look at the number to the right of the decimal point or the digit at the tenth place. If this number is 5 or more, we round the number up to the next whole number. If the number is 4 or less, we leave the number as it is.

For example, let’s look at the number 4.87. The number to the right of the decimal point is 8, which is 5 or more. So we round up and say that 4.87 rounds up to 5.

Now let’s look at the number 4.42. The number to the right of the decimal point is 4, which is less than 5. So we leave the number as it is and say that 4.42 rounds to 4.

  • When we are rounding numbers to one decimal place, we round the first number to the right of the decimal point according to the second number on the right of the decimal point or the digit at the hundredth place.

For example, let’s look at the number 4.65. The second number to the right of the decimal point is 5, which is 5 or more. Hence, we round up the first number to the right of the decimal point, which is 6. So 4.65 rounds to 4.7.

However, if we look at the number 4.64, the second number to the right of the decimal point is 4, which is less than 5. So we leave the first number to the right of the decimal point, which is 6. So 4.64 rounds to 4.6.

  • When we are rounding numbers with two decimal places to the nearest whole number, we need to look at the first number to the right of the decimal point.

For example, let’s look at the number 4.47. If we round up the first number to the right of the decimal point based on the second number to the right of the decimal point, we would get 4.5. However, if we look at the first number to the right of the decimal point, which is 4, this number is less than 5. So we leave the number as it is and say that 4.47 rounds up to 4.
